Emily Carr University under plan

The BC government is providing $1.7 million to help Emily Carr University of Art and Design to develop a business plan for their proposed new campus on Great Northern Way.

The business plan should include “detailed cost estimates, including capital, facility operations and maintenance requirements”. The plan will also address an analysis of labour market demand along with a listing of other funding sources.

An economic impact study was paid for in the Fall to show that provincial funding and city zoning in favour of the relocation of the University to Great Northern Way would help the provincial economy.  City zoning has been kind in allowing a massive construction effort having already started West of the Great Northern Way Campus land.

Lost Creek Fen

A century ago, the land where the railway yards in East Vancouver rest was all under water.

This was until 1913, when what is now known as the Grandview Cut was dug out and was used to fill in the watershed, creating a passage way for trains and more land for the growing demand of industry.

The depression in the land still exists and large puddles often form after a few days rain. At the foot of Scotia Street, where it meets 1st Avenue, there is a small duck pond which the residents say represents  False Creek’s original biodiversity. The site is on private land and it is expected that the land will be sold or become part of the next Emily Carr University.

Neighbours are organizing a Lost Creek Fen Project which will host its first meeting on Thursday, March 15, at the Native Education College, 285 East 5th, at 7 PM.
